Authorship Criteria
BANUA: Jurnal Kesehatan Lingkungan
BANUA: Jurnal Kesehatan Lingkungan is committed to maintaining transparency, accountability, fairness, and academic integrity in scholarly authorship. The journal recognizes that authorship represents both intellectual contributions to scientific research and responsibility for the accuracy, originality, and integrity of published work.
The journal follows internationally recognized authorship principles established by the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE). These principles apply to all manuscripts submitted to BANUA, including original research articles, literature reviews, and other scholarly contributions in environmental health sciences and related disciplines.
Authorship must reflect genuine scholarly contributions rather than academic position, institutional authority, financial support, or administrative involvement.
1. Authorship Requirements
All individuals listed as authors must meet all four authorship criteria described below:
1. Substantial Intellectual Contributions
Make substantial contributions to the conception or design of the research, acquisition of data, analysis, or interpretation of research findings.
In environmental health research, these contributions may include developing research objectives, designing environmental exposure assessments, interpreting laboratory results, analyzing environmental monitoring data, or evaluating public health implications.
2. Manuscript Preparation and Critical Revision
Participate in drafting the manuscript or critically reviewing and revising it for important intellectual content.
Authors must contribute meaningfully to the scientific development of the manuscript rather than providing only general language correction or administrative assistance.
3. Final Approval of the Manuscript
Review and approve the final version of the manuscript before publication.
All authors must understand and agree with the scientific content, conclusions, and implications of the submitted work.
4. Accountability and Research Integrity
Accept responsibility for all aspects of the work and ensure that questions concerning the accuracy, validity, or integrity of any part of the research are appropriately investigated and resolved.
Every author must be able to identify their contributions and have confidence in the integrity of the work performed by their co-authors.
All four criteria must be satisfied. Individuals who do not meet these requirements should be acknowledged appropriately rather than included as authors.
2. Author Contributions
BANUA requires authors to provide a clear statement describing the individual contributions of each author to the research and manuscript preparation.
The journal encourages the use of the Contributor Roles Taxonomy (CRediT) to promote transparency and consistency in reporting scholarly contributions.
Relevant contributor roles include:
-
Conceptualization: Developing research ideas, objectives, and scientific questions.
-
Methodology: Designing research methods, procedures, and analytical approaches.
-
Investigation: Conducting research activities, field investigations, laboratory examinations, or environmental data collection.
-
Data Curation: Organizing, managing, validating, and maintaining research datasets.
-
Formal Analysis: Performing statistical, mathematical, or computational analysis of research findings.
-
Validation: Verifying the accuracy, reliability, and reproducibility of research procedures and results.
-
Visualization: Preparing scientific tables, figures, graphs, maps, and other visual presentations of research findings.
-
Writing - Original Draft: Preparing the initial manuscript and developing its scientific content.
-
Writing - Review & Editing: Critically revising and improving the manuscript for scientific accuracy and intellectual quality.
-
Supervision: Providing scientific oversight and guidance throughout the research process.
-
Project Administration: Coordinating and managing research activities.
-
Funding Acquisition: Securing financial support for the research.
Other recognized CRediT roles, including Resources and Software, may be reported when applicable.
Multiple contributors may share the same role, and individual authors may perform several roles. However, assignment of a CRediT role does not independently establish eligibility for authorship.
The Author Contributions statement must accurately reflect the work undertaken by each author and must be approved by all listed authors.
3. Corresponding Author
The corresponding author serves as the primary contact between the author group and the editorial office of BANUA throughout the submission, peer-review, revision, publication, and post-publication processes.
The corresponding author is responsible for:
-
Ensuring that all listed authors meet the journal's authorship criteria.
-
Confirming that all authors have reviewed and approved the submitted manuscript.
-
Obtaining agreement from all authors regarding the authorship list and author order.
-
Ensuring that author names, institutional affiliations, and contact information are accurate.
-
Submitting the manuscript and responding to editorial and reviewer communications.
-
Coordinating manuscript revisions and obtaining approval from all authors before submitting revised or final versions.
-
Ensuring that relevant ethical declarations, conflicts of interest, funding disclosures, author contribution statements, and AI-use declarations are completed accurately.
-
Responding to questions concerning the manuscript after publication and cooperating with legitimate requests for clarification or supporting information.
The corresponding author must be identified in the manuscript with an asterisk (*) and a valid email address, in accordance with the journal's Author Guidelines.
Designation as the corresponding author does not reduce the responsibilities of other co-authors for the integrity of the published work.
4. Changes in Authorship
Any proposed addition, removal, or rearrangement of authors after manuscript submission must be supported by a clear written explanation and agreement from all authors concerned.
Requests for authorship changes must include:
-
A written justification explaining the reason for the proposed change.
-
Confirmation that the revised authorship arrangement accurately reflects the contributions of all individuals involved.
-
Written agreement from all existing authors and any individuals being added or removed.
-
An updated Author Contributions statement when necessary.
The Editorial Board will review the request before determining whether the proposed change is acceptable.
Changes in authorship will not be approved solely for reasons related to academic position, institutional authority, professional relationships, financial interests, or other considerations unrelated to genuine scholarly contributions.
The order of authors must be determined collectively by the author group.
When an authorship dispute cannot be resolved among the authors, the journal may request clarification or refer the matter to the relevant research institution for investigation.
The journal reserves the right to suspend manuscript processing while serious authorship disputes remain unresolved.
5. Acknowledgments
Individuals who contribute to a research project but do not meet all four authorship criteria should be recognized in the Acknowledgments section, with their permission.
Such contributions may include:
-
Technical or laboratory assistance.
-
Administrative and logistical support.
-
Assistance with environmental sampling or fieldwork that does not meet the full authorship criteria.
-
General research supervision without substantial intellectual involvement.
-
Language editing, proofreading, or manuscript formatting.
-
Institutional assistance or provision of research facilities.
-
Financial or material support for research activities.
Acknowledgments must accurately describe the contributions provided and must not imply endorsement of the research findings without the individual's consent.
Individuals must not be included as authors solely because they provided funding, institutional approval, general supervision, or administrative assistance.
BANUA does not permit honorary, gift, guest, or ghost authorship. All individuals who satisfy the authorship criteria must be appropriately recognized, and individuals who do not qualify must not be listed as authors.
6. Use of Artificial Intelligence in Authorship
Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools, including generative AI systems such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, and other AI-assisted technologies, cannot be listed as authors or co-authors.
AI systems do not qualify for authorship because they cannot accept responsibility for scientific accuracy, approve a manuscript, disclose conflicts of interest, or be accountable for the integrity of published research.
Authors who use AI-assisted technologies during manuscript preparation must comply with BANUA's Policy on the Use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Generative AI in Scholarly Publishing.
Authors remain fully responsible for:
-
The accuracy, originality, and scientific validity of AI-assisted manuscript content.
-
Verifying scientific statements, research findings, citations, references, and digital object identifiers (DOIs).
-
Ensuring that AI-generated materials do not contain plagiarism, fabricated information, or misleading interpretations.
-
Protecting confidential research information and personal data when using AI technologies.
-
Transparently disclosing substantive AI assistance in manuscript preparation, data analysis, image generation, or other research activities.
-
Ensuring that AI-assisted technologies do not replace independent scientific judgment or the authors' intellectual contributions.
Any substantive use of generative AI must be declared in accordance with the journal's AI disclosure requirements.
AI technologies must not be used to fabricate data, falsify research findings, manipulate scientific images, conceal plagiarism, or generate unverified references.
The use of AI does not reduce or transfer the accountability of human authors.
7. Authorship Integrity and Editorial Responsibility
BANUA reserves the right to request clarification, supporting documentation, or additional information regarding authorship and individual author contributions whenever concerns arise.
The editorial team may investigate suspected cases of inappropriate authorship, including honorary authorship, ghost authorship, undisclosed contributors, and disputes concerning intellectual contributions.
Where necessary, the journal may request confirmation from individual authors or consult relevant institutions in accordance with recognized publication ethics procedures.
Serious violations may result in manuscript rejection, suspension of the editorial process, or appropriate post-publication action.
Editorial assessments will be conducted fairly, with consideration of the available evidence and the rights and responsibilities of all individuals involved.
8. Final Statement
BANUA: Jurnal Kesehatan Lingkungan upholds the principle that authorship must be based on genuine intellectual contributions, transparent reporting, and responsibility for scientific integrity.
All authors must meet the established authorship criteria, approve the final manuscript, and accept accountability for the published work.
Authors are expected to report their contributions accurately, disclose relevant conflicts of interest, and comply with the journal's publication ethics and artificial intelligence policies.
By submitting a manuscript to BANUA, all authors acknowledge their responsibilities under this Authorship Policy and confirm their commitment to ethical scholarly publishing.
The journal may review and update this policy periodically to maintain consistency with recognized international standards for authorship, contributorship, and publication ethics.
