Post-Publication Discussion
BANUA: Jurnal Kesehatan Lingkungan
BANUA: Jurnal Kesehatan Lingkungan encourages constructive academic discussion, critical scientific evaluation, and scholarly exchange concerning published research as essential components of research integrity and the continuous development of environmental health sciences.
The journal recognizes that post-publication discussion allows researchers, academics, environmental health professionals, public health practitioners, and readers to critically examine published findings, clarify scientific interpretations, identify methodological limitations, and contribute to the reliability and advancement of scientific knowledge.
BANUA welcomes evidence-based comments, questions, and concerns regarding published articles. Such contributions should promote scientific transparency, research reproducibility, environmental health knowledge, and evidence-based public health practice.
All post-publication discussions must remain relevant, objective, respectful, and consistent with recognized standards of academic integrity and publication ethics.
1. Scope of Post-Publication Discussion
Post-publication discussion may address scientific, methodological, ethical, or editorial aspects of articles published in BANUA.
Relevant issues may include:
-

Transparency and Reproducibility: Availability of relevant methodological information, data interpretation procedures, analytical techniques, and other details necessary to evaluate the reliability and reproducibility of published research.
-
Research Integrity: Possible plagiarism, duplicate publication, inappropriate data manipulation, undisclosed conflicts of interest, authorship concerns, or other issues affecting the integrity of published articles.
-
Scientific Limitations: Methodological weaknesses, potential biases, limitations of environmental exposure assessments, and uncertainties that may influence the interpretation or generalizability of research findings.
Post-publication discussion is intended to strengthen scientific understanding and improve the scholarly record.
It must not be used to advance personal disputes, promote unrelated interests, or make unsupported accusations against authors, reviewers, editors, institutions, or other individuals.
2. Submission Procedures
Readers, researchers, authors, environmental health professionals, and other interested parties may submit scholarly comments, questions, or concerns regarding articles published in BANUA.
Submissions should be addressed to the journal's Editorial Office through its official communication channels.
Editorial Office of BANUA: Jurnal Kesehatan Lingkungan
Email: jurnal.banuapalu@gmail.com
Journal Website: https://jurnal.poltekkespalu.ac.id/index.php/bjkl
Each submission should include:
-
The title of the published article being discussed.
-
The name of the author or authors.
-
The year, volume, and issue of publication.
-
The Digital Object Identifier (DOI) or article URL, when available.
-
A clear explanation of the scientific question, criticism, or concern.
-
Relevant supporting evidence, scientific references, or documentation.
-
The name and contact information of the individual submitting the comments, unless anonymity is requested for a legitimate reason.
Comments should be written clearly and supported by appropriate scientific evidence.
The Editorial Office may request additional information or clarification when a submission is incomplete or when supporting documentation is necessary.
Submissions may be declined when they lack scientific relevance, contain unsupported allegations, fall outside the journal's scope, or fail to meet appropriate standards of academic and professional communication.
3. Editorial Evaluation
The Editorial Board of BANUA will conduct an initial assessment of submitted post-publication comments to determine their scientific relevance, clarity, credibility, and compliance with the journal's publication ethics standards.
The assessment will consider the significance of the concerns raised, the supporting evidence, and their potential implications for the accuracy and reliability of the published article.
Depending on the nature of the submission, the Editorial Board may:
-
Evaluate the comments internally.
-
Consult the authors of the original article.
-
Seek opinions from independent scientific experts or qualified reviewers.
-
Request additional evidence or clarification from the individual submitting the comments.
-
Invite the original authors to prepare a written response.
-
Conduct further editorial assessment when credible concerns regarding research integrity, ethical compliance, or data reliability are identified.
Editorial decisions will be based on the scientific substance of the discussion and the available evidence.
Legitimate scientific disagreement or academic criticism does not automatically constitute evidence of research misconduct.
The journal will distinguish between differences in scientific interpretation, correctable errors, and concerns that may require formal investigation.
4. Authors' Right to Respond
When a post-publication comment raises substantive scientific questions or concerns, BANUA may invite the authors of the original article to provide a written response.
Authors are encouraged to address the issues professionally and provide explanations supported by appropriate scientific evidence.
Responses may include:
-
Clarification of research objectives, methods, or analytical procedures.
-
Additional explanation of environmental measurements, laboratory findings, or statistical analyses.
-
Supporting references or relevant research documentation.
-
Clarification of the interpretation and limitations of research findings.
-
Correction of identified inaccuracies when necessary.
The journal aims to provide authors with a fair opportunity to respond to significant academic criticism.
However, the decision to request an author response and the format of any subsequent publication remain the responsibility of the Editorial Board.
An author's response does not automatically resolve the scientific concern.
The Editorial Board will assess the original comments, author explanations, and available supporting evidence before determining whether additional editorial action is necessary.
5. Publication of Discussions and Responses
BANUA may publish accepted scholarly comments, letters to the editor, author responses, or other forms of post-publication discussion when considered scientifically relevant and appropriate by the Editorial Board.
Such contributions may be published as separate scholarly communications or linked to the original published article.
All contributions intended for publication must undergo appropriate editorial assessment and, where necessary, independent peer review.
Published discussions must meet the journal's standards concerning:
-
Scientific relevance and accuracy.
-
Methodological and analytical quality.
-
Originality and academic integrity.
-
Appropriate scientific references.
-
Professional and respectful communication.
-
Compliance with publication ethics requirements.
The Editorial Board may request revisions to improve clarity, scientific accuracy, organization, or consistency with the journal's editorial standards.
Editorial modifications must not alter the intended scientific meaning of the contributor's statements.
The publication of comments or author responses does not imply that BANUA endorses every interpretation, criticism, or conclusion expressed by the contributors.
The journal's responsibility is to facilitate fair, transparent, and evidence-based scholarly communication.
6. Corrections, Clarifications, and Editorial Actions
When post-publication discussion identifies credible errors, omissions, inconsistencies, or other concerns affecting a published article, BANUA will evaluate the matter in accordance with its publication ethics and research integrity policies.
Depending on the findings, the journal may take one or more of the following actions:
-
Request for Clarification: Ask the original authors to provide additional information, explanations, or supporting documentation.
-
Correction or Corrigendum: Publish a formal correction when an error requires amendment but does not substantially invalidate the principal findings or conclusions of the article.
-
Editorial Clarification: Publish a clarification or editorial notice when additional information is necessary to explain the scientific context, methodological details, or interpretation of published findings.
-
Expression of Concern: Publish an Expression of Concern when substantial questions regarding the reliability or integrity of an article remain unresolved or require further investigation.
-
Article Retraction: Retract an article when reliable evidence demonstrates that its findings or conclusions are seriously compromised by major errors, plagiarism, fabrication, falsification, unethical research practices, or other significant problems.
-
Institutional Referral: Refer credible allegations of research misconduct to the relevant research institution, research ethics committee, funding agency, or other appropriate authority when formal investigation is necessary.
Editorial actions will be proportionate to the nature and seriousness of the identified concern.
Published corrections, expressions of concern, and retraction notices will be clearly identified and linked to the original article whenever technically feasible.
Significant changes to the scholarly record must be documented transparently rather than introduced without appropriate notice.
The purpose of these actions is to maintain the accuracy, reliability, and integrity of published scientific information.
7. Ethical Standards and Professional Conduct
All individuals participating in post-publication discussion must comply with recognized principles of academic integrity, ethical communication, and professional conduct.
Comments and responses must focus on scientific evidence, research methods, data interpretation, ethical considerations, or other legitimate academic concerns.
BANUA does not permit:
-
Personal attacks or harassment directed at authors, reviewers, editors, or other individuals.
-
Defamatory, discriminatory, threatening, or abusive statements.
-
Deliberate misrepresentation of research findings or scientific information.
-
Unsupported allegations of misconduct.
-
Disclosure of confidential research data or identifiable personal information without appropriate authorization.
-
Attempts to use post-publication discussion to advance personal, commercial, institutional, or professional disputes unrelated to the scientific content.
Submissions containing inappropriate material may be rejected or returned for revision.
Concerns involving potential research misconduct must be presented responsibly and supported by sufficient information to permit an objective assessment.
BANUA will distinguish legitimate academic criticism from allegations requiring further examination under its research misconduct procedures.
8. Confidentiality and Impartiality
BANUA will handle post-publication comments, author responses, and related editorial correspondence with appropriate confidentiality, impartiality, and professional responsibility.
Information will be shared only with individuals or institutions whose involvement is reasonably necessary for editorial assessment, verification, or investigation.
Confidential research information, personal data, unpublished materials, and other sensitive documents will be handled in accordance with applicable ethical and data protection requirements.
Editors must evaluate post-publication concerns independently and without inappropriate influence from financial, professional, institutional, personal, or academic relationships.
Editors who have relevant conflicts of interest must disclose them and withdraw from the assessment when their impartiality may reasonably be questioned.
Where necessary, an independent editor will be assigned to evaluate the matter.
The journal will make reasonable efforts to ensure that all parties are treated fairly and that editorial decisions are based on evidence and scientific considerations.
9. Research Integrity and Further Investigation
When post-publication comments raise credible concerns regarding research misconduct, BANUA may initiate a preliminary editorial assessment.
Such concerns may include:
-
Fabrication or falsification of environmental monitoring data.
-
Manipulation of laboratory results, research images, figures, or statistical findings.
-
Plagiarism or inappropriate reuse of previously published materials.
-
Duplicate or redundant publication.
-
Undisclosed conflicts of interest.
-
Inaccurate reporting of ethical approval or research permissions.
-
Misrepresentation of research methods, sampling procedures, or data collection activities.
-
Inappropriate use of artificial intelligence to fabricate, manipulate, or misrepresent scientific information.
-
Other serious violations that may compromise the reliability of published environmental health research.
The journal may request supporting documentation, including original datasets, laboratory records, environmental sampling information, ethical approval documents, research protocols, or other relevant materials.
When an allegation requires a formal investigation beyond the authority or resources of the journal, BANUA may consult the authors' affiliated institution, research ethics committee, funding agency, or another competent authority.
The editorial assessment conducted by BANUA does not replace a formal institutional investigation into research misconduct.
The journal will determine appropriate editorial action based on the available evidence, relevant institutional findings, and applicable publication ethics standards.
10. Appeals and Further Correspondence
Individuals who believe their post-publication comments or concerns have been handled unfairly may submit a written appeal to the Editorial Office.
An appeal must clearly explain the grounds for reconsideration and include relevant supporting evidence.
Where reasonably possible, the appeal will be reviewed by an editor who was not directly involved in the original decision.
The Editorial Board may uphold, modify, or reconsider its previous decision based on the available evidence and principles of procedural fairness.
The journal may decline repeated correspondence that does not provide new information, substantive clarification, or legitimate grounds for reconsideration.
The Editorial Board retains responsibility for determining the appropriate editorial procedures and final outcomes.
Any appeal process must preserve the independence, transparency, and integrity of the journal's publication practices.
11. Policy Implementation and Ethical Framework
